The city of Lyon models the effect of refurbishment and smart buildings on the CO2 emissions and energy consumption

lyon_part_dieu_centre_commercial_21In Lyon’s dynamic and happening district Part Dieu, a smart challenge is being prepared. As being part of their sustainability agenda, Lyon aims to double the district area with unchanged energy consumption. How to achieve this? By building smart buildings and refurbish existing ones.

Lyon has already made calculations on what buildings to refurbish and to what level and the target energy levels of new smart buildings. However, by using the Decision Support Tool, Lyon aims to check their decisions on the right level of refurbishment, analyze the effect on CO2 emissions and the optimal energy mix for heating and cooling. By uploading real city data, Lyon is able analyze the expected effect of the measure in geographical maps, compare the effect with KPI’s of other cities, and playing with different scenarios like changing energy prices.

Currently, Lyon and Transform are designing the measure structure to model the measure into the tool. Simultaneously, Lyon is collecting the necessary city data for the measure to upload into the tool.

The effect of solar panels on CO2 emissions by the Decision Support Tool

Amsterdam analyses the effect of solar panels on CO2 emissions, costs and energy consumption by the Decision Support Tool.

solar-power1-1024x665Several solar panel projects have been implemented in the city already, but what Amsterdam aims for is a dynamic model that calculates the effect of solar panels if implemented now and in the future. In the innovative world of solar panels, prices are decreasing, panel efficiencies are improving substantially and subsidies are varying. Amsterdam is currently designing this dynamic measure in the Decision Support Tool.

By uploading real city data the Decision Support Tool will be able to analyze the expected effect of solar panel implementation on selected KPIs in functional maps and time graphs and compare the effect with (green) energy performances of other cities, CO2 emissions and naturally investment costs.

As Amsterdam aims to implement solar panel projects in multiple city districts, the tool enables Amsterdam to vary with different geographic areas and penetration rates easily by selecting the right area on the map.

Currently, Amsterdam and Transform are uploading the necessary data into the tool, followed by the modelling of the measure structure. After that, the solar panel model in the tool is ready to use.

TRANSFORM Intake Workshop in Vienna

Intake workshop Vienna

As part of the TRANSFORM – Transformation Agenda for Low Carbon Cities – project, a top class workshop took place on September 17th and 18th, 2013.

About 50 experts in the fields of housing, city- and energy planning, climate and mobility met in the premises of the city planning Vienna. The municipality of Vienna presented the Smart City Vienna Framework Strategy, the Energy Planning Guidelines and implementation activities in the building sector. Christof Schremmer from the ÖIR presented the TRANSFORM project. In different working groups the international participants discussed recommendations for Vienna to become smarter and use less energy in the fields of new settlements, housing renovation and transport. Experts from Hamburg, Copenhagen and London presented their Energy Reduction Guidelines to implement their Smart Cities Strategies.
