Greater Copenhagen Utility (HOFOR) is Denmark’s largest utility within our core business areas, including district heating, district cooling and city gas. We supply 98 % of the heat demand in Copenhagen Municipality. Together with two district heating transmission companies we operate one of the largest district heating networks in the World (approx. 4300 MJ/s).We are assisting the Municipality of Copenhagen in becoming carbon neutral by 2025. In 2014 43 % of the heat was produced by CHP based on sustainable biomass, and during 2020-25 the remaining coal-fired CHPs will be replaced by a wood-fired CHPs.
Activities of the company with respect to “smart city” topics
HOFOR will deliver flexibility to the power grid by storing heat in traditional heat stores, in the pipelines and in the building mass, and by using heat pumps and electric boilers to produce heat preferably when electricity prices are low. We have installed remote online heat meters at almost all buildings and we intend to interface these meters and data transmitters with intelligent equipment within the buildings to obtain maximum flexibility of the total heat system from production to end-use.
